Growing Tips

Okra is a plant that loves heat and will not tolerate cold weather planting. Wait until the soil temperatures are around 70°F.

You may start your seeds indoors for an earlier harvest, just make sure to plant in a peat pot so you do not destroy the root ball on transplanting.

Culinary Uses

Most used in dishes like soups and stews because it contains a natural thickening agent when heated. This is beneficial to dishes like gumbo.

Harvesting Crops

Plants started indoors can be harvested in as little as 30 days after transplanting. Pick okra pods when they are around 2-3 inches long.

Harvesting okra pods every other day will encourage continuous production and a heavier crop.

Harvesting Seed

Allow Okra pods to fully mature and become brown. Cut them off the plant after turning brown.

Allow to dry for 3 weeks before removing seeds and storing properly for next season planting.
